Green Lunar New Year (LNY) Fairs

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has been organising the annual Lunar New Year (LNY) fairs gathering hundreds of stalls at various districts for citizens to purchase a variety of goods including flowering plants, decorative products and traditional festive food, etc. to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

In view of the considerable amount of waste being disposed of after the annual LNY fairs, the ECC and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), with the assistance from FEHD, have organised the “Green LNY Fair” Programmes to enhance environmental awareness among stall operators and the general public since 2017. The Programmes comprise a number of green activities / measures that aim at promoting waste reduction at source, proper recycling and resource sharing during festive celebrations -

The programme contents included:

  • Promotional booth
  • Green Stall Scheme
  • Shopping bag sharing stands
  • Reusable tableware lending services
  • Public education on waste separation and clean recycling
  • Promotion of food waste, yard waste and polyfoam recycling to stall owners
  • Collection and redistribution of unsold goods or resources

In addition, to encourage reuse of resources and achieve waste reduction, the ECC and the EPD have also collaborated with non-government organisations to organise “Bamboo Reuse and Upcycling Programme” by using the used bamboos collected from LNY Fairs to conduct a series of upcycling workshops, experience camps, etc., or to produce bamboo mulch for horticultural use.
